Auckland Museum has launched Future Museum, a high-level strategic and capital investment plan that will guide a process of transformational change. This change spans all the dimensions that the museum works in – onsite, offsite and online – and will ensure the museum can achieve its vision and mission over the next 20 years.

This position is part of the wider Collections and Research directorate. The role and contribution of this team are at the heart of many of the Museum’s aspirations as expressed in Future Museum, making the collections available onsite, offsite and online.  The collections and knowledge about them are often the essential basis for Museum exhibitions, programmes and events. The Collections Cataloguing project will result in a significantly enriched electronic catalogue of the Museum’s collections which will support a wide range of future programmes as well as the flagship Collections Online project.

The Museum is a bicultural workplace and the person in this role will uphold the principles of He Korahi Māori and Teu Le Va. To be successful in this role, you will preferably have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Library & Information Sciences or Museum Studies or a field relevant to the Museum’s activities is highly desirable
  • Excellent appreciation of and interest in the Documentary Heritage collections of the Museum
  • Understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and their application in a Museum context
  • Demonstrate respect and sensitivity to the mana of the Museum’s taonga
  • Technical experience in scanning heritage material and creating digital images
  • Flexible attitude and ability to handle a variety of collection materials
  • Excellent computer and keyboard skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise tasks
  • Work collaboratively with team members and other colleagues
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced and lively organisation
  • Holds a passion for dynamic museums and for working in a cross-functional team environment
