In July 2016, Auckland Museum’s Marine Department was gifted the Mollusc Collection of approximately 8000 specimen lots from the late Mrs Margaret Morley. To document and incorporate this extension collection Auckland Museum is offering a 3 year fixed term and part time employment opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic museum professional to join the Museum in this project at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal.

The Collection Technician, Natural Sciences – Margaret Morley Cataloguing Project will accession,  rehouse and incorporate this collection of around 8000 specimen lots into the Marine Collections. They will be responsible for the expert physical care, handling, collection preparation and documentation. Managed by the Senior Collection Manager – Natural Sciences at a project level, this role will work closely with the Collection Manager, Curators and other Natural Sciences Cataloguing Technicians. 24 hours per week is required on this project and the plan would be to spread this across 3 working days.

To be successful in this fixed term role, you will offer/possess:

  • Relevant museum experience including object handling, cataloguing and packing
  • Subject knowledge relevant to the Museum’s Natural Science collections, in particular Marine
  • Demonstrated understanding of taxonomy and Linnaean classification
  • Knowledge of and interest in New Zealand flora and/or fauna
  • Collection database experience is essential, preferably in Vernon CMS
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills, as well as a strong work ethic
  • A relevant degree is desirable
