The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool and soon to be opened Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is internationally renowned as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our gold-rush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Collections Manager to join the Collections and Curatorial team to manage, care for and provide access to a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects.

As Collection Manager, you will be responsible for the management, care and provision of access to collections and heritage assets cared for by Sovereign Hill Museums Association across various locations, including the Outdoor Museum and Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections.

You will develop and maintain collection management systems and frameworks to ensure the ongoing preservation and access to collections and Sovereign Hill’s obligations as an accredited museum including physical and digital documentation, policy and procedures, preservation and conservation, storage, object handling, access protocols, loans and adherence to legislative guidelines.

Working collaboratively across the organisation you will ensure collections support the organisation’s strategic focus and enhance visitor experience. This includes education, operations, events and programming, research and communications and marketing. The role works closely with the volunteer program to develop and deliver projects that support collections management and access.

As Collections Manager you will have the opportunity to contribute to a number of significant Master Plan projects, including the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections and the Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades including collections access programs, education, events and programming and research programs, and the development of plans in relation to the Gold Pavilion.

If you are a planner and problem-solver with a ‘can do’ attitude, are a well organised administrator, a strategic thinker and someone who loves collaboration and wants to make their mark in a significant museum organisation then this could be the opportunity you have been looking for.
