The Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in Australia. The project will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW.
As a part of our Collection Relocation project, you will be working on the preparation of the collection currently stored at Ultimo for digitisation and relocation to the museum discovery centre. In this role, you will be responsible for implementation of best practice and programs to conserve and develop the Museum’s multi-disciplinary heritage collections, and enable their access in research, exhibition, public and associated programs.
Key highlights of the role:
- Develop, evaluate, recommend and implement policies, procedures, operational plans, initiatives and scientific research programmes pertaining to conservation and set direction and overall long- and short-term priorities for the conservation unit
- Implement and integrate approved policies and procedures across MAAS and align with current national and international standards and practice
- Build and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships
- Participate in exhibition development
- Ensure statutory and legislative requirements are adhered to and effective risk management procedures are in place
- Supervise and motivate staff, volunteers and interns to ensure high level collection management practice
- Assess conservation and preservation needs, participate in optimal prevention conservation activities and procedure
- Ensure safety, security, location control and maintenance of objects on display and in storage
We are looking for someone to join the team with the following attributes:
- Demonstrated and extensive experience in assessing conservation and preservation needs of multi-disciplinary heritage collections
- Tertiary qualification, specialist training and experience in the conservation of cultural materials from multi-disciplinary heritage collections or equivalent plus a minimum of 5 years conservation experience in their subject specialisation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of national and international frameworks, ethics and issues relevant to heritage collections
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high quality documentation and reports.
- Experience in staff management, including training and WH&S issues.
- Demonstrated understanding of risk management and disaster preparedness
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and manage projects, allied with excellent organisation skills and attention to detail.
- Driver’s license required or willingness to obtain
