The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues.? Established in 1879, the museum includes the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Observatory and the Museums Discovery Centre. The Museum is custodian to over half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia.
The Powerhouse Program is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in the country. The Program will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW. The Program includes four key projects; the establishment of the Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta, the expansion of the Powerhouse collection facilities in Castle Hill, the establishment of the Powerhouse Creative Industries Precinct in Ultimo and the Relocation and Digitisation of over 300,000 objects from the Powerhouse collections.
The Opportunity
Role 1 – Until June 2022 (Hazards – CRD Project Team)
Under the supervision of a Senior Conservator you will be identifying and documenting hazardous materials currently stored at the Museum’s Ultimo location. This includes undertaking in-depth materials research and developed protocols for the ongoing management of hazardous materials in the Museum’s collection. Under the supervision of a Senior Conservator you will be preparing collection items for exhibition and display. This includes undertaking preventive and remedial conservation treatment and liaising with exhibition staff during installation. For more information on this position, view the role description here.
The successful candidate
- Demonstrated experience in assessing conservation and preservation needs of multidisciplinary heritage collections
- Knowledge of national and international frameworks, ethics and issues relevant to heritage collections.
- Understanding of hazardous materials found in museum collection and/or experience in performing conservation treatments of collection items relevant to incumbent’s specialisation
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and manage projects, allied with excellent organisation skills and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality documentation and reports
- Tertiary qualification in Conservation or a related field, plus a minimum of 2 years conservation experience in one or more subject specialisation areas; or 5 years conservation experience.
- Physical requirements: This role requires the physical capability to stand for long periods of time, fine motor skills and manual dexterity to safely handle collection objects.
