The Paintings conservator performs and documents professional preventive and remedial conservation services for paintings and related painted objects in the National Collection. The work includes survey, treatment and maintenance of acrylic and oil based paintings, frames and dioramas. The conservator also participates in multi-disciplinary teams to implement conservation, preservation, exhibition, access and loan programs; documents work performed and implements new and improved conservation processes and techniques.
Note: Tertiary qualifications in conservation are highly desirable.
Core Responsibilities
- Under the professional supervision of the Senior Conservator Paintings, use established and innovative techniques and procedures to carry out conservation and preservation treatments on paintings and related painted objects, including dioramas
- Document all conservation, preservation and collection management activities on the Memorial’s Collection Management System
- Undertake research and scientific analysis to determine composition and condition of painted surfaces
- Assist with the development and implementation of new conservation techniques and procedures
- Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver exhibition and conservation programs including gallery installations and demounts, loans, collection condition surveys, re-housing, gallery and storage maintenance, and other preservation programs including hazard mitigation
- Provide conservation and preservation advice to other sections of the Memorial, professional colleagues and to the public
- Assist in the supervision and development of other staff, volunteers or interns
- Manual handling and movement of a variety of collection material including but not limited to paintings, frames, glass and other art objects as required.
