Ballarat’s premier cultural attraction and living museum Sovereign Hill is looking for a Costume Production Assistant to join its award winning Costume Department on a 6 month, full-time fixed term contract.
Working as part of a small team, the position is responsible for providing technical expertise and support in our wardrobe department and production assistance in our on-site costume manufacturing workshop.
Your Skills & Experience:
- Possess a relevant qualification from a recognised institution or have equivalent industry experience in a Wardrobe and garment manufacturing environment
- Experience in backstage wardrobe techniques and equipment including: steaming, pressing, laundering, spot cleaning, stain removal, repairs and minor alterations of costume elements
- Competent at operative Wardrobe equipment: e.g. washing machines, tumble dryers, irons, steamers
- Experience in costume manufacturing/production including use of industrial sewing machines, pressing, cutting and finishing
- Strong service ethic and willingness to learn and service the needs of the living museum
- Good understanding of wardrobe maintenance and ability to execute complex repairs and alterations to a satisfactory level
- A good understanding of 1850s fashion history.
The successful applicant must have:
- Demonstrated ability in basic to advanced sewing techniques and machine operations including but not limited to straight sewing, overlocking, French and flat seams, pin tucking, pleating, hemming, pressing, buttonholing and tailoring
- Demonstrated capacity to carry out quality control checks
- Demonstrated basic patternmaking skills
- Ability to work unsupervised as well as in a team environment
- Must have initiative and be prepared to accept responsibility for allocated tasks
- Excellent customer service, verbal, and written communications skills
- Ability and willingness to learn new techniques and skills
- Ability and willingness to work occasional weekends
