The Australian Museum is a museum of the 21st century, presenting contemporary issues and popular debate about the cultural and natural worlds. The Museum is soon to open a new Indigenous gallery called Sea Country, build a new Pacific Gallery, participate in the Corroboree Festival, and has an active RAP. The new Cultural Collection Acquisition Policy consists of three priority areas; Contemporary Indigenous, Contemporary Pacific, and Aboriginal NSW. The Museum seeks innovative and committed people to work across collections, programs and audience engagement.
We have an opening for an energetic and results-driven people-motivator with an active and proven record in Pacific content creation for exhibitions, and strong Pacific community engagement skill to join the Cultural Collections Unit at the Australian Museum, one of NSW’s most popular and dynamic attractions for locals and tourists alike. You will be a champion of creativity within the Pacific team, leading, inspiring and collaborating to deliver new Pacific content for the Australian Museum.
The Requirements
The successful applicant operates with a high level of autonomy in respect to the assigned operational area, and is fully accountable for the quality, integrity and validity of the content of information provided on new public content. The position will be expected to be both creative and innovative in developing new content and exhibition ideas.
The successful applicant will be making decisions on which cultural experts and community representatives should be consulted, and how their advice is used. In consultation with the collection management team, they will need to make decisions on how to manage any issues involved with privacy or cultural sensitivity, and any risks to collection objects.
Requirements
- Develop and curate rich new content for the Museum’s public spaces based on the Pacific collections and other external resources as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the Museum’s exhibition team to support the delivery of new Pacific content through, for example, developing concepts, writing labels, community consultation, research into primary and secondary sources, and consultation with community members and other experts as appropriate.
- Contribute to identifying future cultural collection acquisition priorities, in line with the overall collection development strategy, that will meet future exhibition aspirations.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of online and digital engagement through education and public programming content based around Pacific collections at the Museum.
- Contribute to and participate in the ongoing community engagement initiatives of the collection management team.
- Assist with seeking external support for public programming initiatives based on the Pacific Collections
