Curator (ACMI Renewal) – Designated First Nations position

A unique institution at the heart of Melbourne’s iconic meeting place, Federation Square, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is Australia’s national museum of film, TV, videogames, digital culture and art. Welcoming over 1.3m visitors in 2016/17, ACMI is the most visited museum of the moving image in the world and the third most visited museum in Australia.

In the 2017-18 Victorian Government Budget, ACMI received $5million for the first stage of its redevelopment. In addition to developing designs for a major physical and technological overhaul of the Federation Square attraction, this funding will allow ACMI to further improve the current Flinders Street Entrance. Earmarked for completion in 2019, the redevelopment will create more public space and moving image programming that will increase annual visitation, education outcomes and inspire and support young people to pursue careers in the creative industries sector.

We have a newly created role working as part of our project curatorial team to identify and craft the core stories, and identify objects and interactives that will tell these stories in an innovative way. A major focus of the position is working with key internal and external stakeholders (including ACMI’s Indigenous Advisory Committee) to identify, develop and deliver indigenous content and programs; but you will also work across the exhibition and broader programs holistically.

You will be experienced in producing exhibitions with a passion for the moving image with the ability to navigate ATSIA artistic and cultural practice and communities locally and nationally. Your excellent research, writing and organisational skills coupled with ability to forge new relationships will enable you to thrive in this role.

Applications should provide a 500 word response demonstrating their ability to meet the requirements of the role outlined within the position description and be submitted together with a brief resume and the Confirmation of Aboriginality or Torres Strait Islander Descendants Form.
