Curator History Victorian Bushfires 

Australia’s largest public museum organisation is seeking a Curator History Victorian Bushfires to provide curatorial expertise that contributes to the delivery of history-based content for the Living with Bushfires website. The role requires strong historical research skills and the ability to present in-depth research to the general public. This is a two-day a week position until the end of August 2023.

ABOUT THE POSITION: 

The primary responsibility of the Curator History Victorian Bushfires is to work with Museums Victoria staff and external stakeholders to deliver content relating to the history of bushfires in Victoria for the Living with Bushfires website. This will involve historical research, content creation, clearing images and other permissions, and working with fire-affected communities and other stakeholders as required to develop and sign-off content. The position will also contribute to the design and user experience of history-based content for the website and will collaborate with the Digital Platforms team to upload and edit content via the CMS.

Notable skills and experiences: 

  • Undertake in-depth research relating to the history of bushfires in Victoria and develop and maintain associated research files.
  • Create clear and accessible content for the general public and education groups relating to the history of bushfires in Victoria for the Living with Bushfires website. Ensure individual, community and organisational consents and approvals are obtained for all written content.
  • Research, select, commission and clear images for website use ensuring that both copyright and relevant individual or community consents have been obtained.
  • Work with Digital Project Producer and internal and external stakeholders to develop the history section of the Living with Bushfires website, including content, graphics, design, functionality and user experience.
  • Liaise with team members, external stakeholders and community members as required.
  • Comply with Museums Victoria’s policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations.

The successful applicant will have: 

  • Demonstrated research expertise with specialist knowledge in one or more of the following fields: Australian social history, environmental history, or the history of bushfires in Victoria.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills – particularly the ability to write for a public audience, engage with community and represent the Museum to the public.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating content for the web; with experience using Museums Victoria’s internal systems including Ke EMu, MV Images, and the MV CMS an advantage but not essential.
  • Experience in applying contemporary museum principles and ethics particularly in relation to working with potentially traumatic content and affected communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both in a team and as an individual, and sound time-management skills.
  • The successful applicant is required to undergo a National Police Records Check and Working with Children Check and be assessed as suitable (new employees are required to meet this cost).
