What will you do?

Curator – Ocean Science and Technology is a new position at the museum, reflecting the museum’s focus on the present and future of Australia’s relationships with its seas, oceans and rivers, and the need to communicate our understanding of our oceans and the new technologies being developed to drive our national economic development. The postholder will take responsibility for the development of the museum’s narrative theme Confronting the Sea, which explores human responses to the challenges of working with and on the oceans. This is one of six “Master Narratives” that will guide development of the museum’s galleries and collection acquisitions over the next 20 years.

As Curator – Ocean Science and Technology, you will actively search out and acquire significant objects with high interpretative impact; foster relationships with key individuals and organisations leading the field in Ocean Science and Technology. The collections and expertise you develop will underpin and inform communication with our visitors on issues around Australia’s marine environments and resources, future and emerging technologies (such as AUVs and robotics) and how they will impact Australia’s future.

This role will be expected work closely with other areas of the museum, to research, develop and complete projects linked to the marine science and technology theme. In the coming years, major exhibition and learning projects will depend on the work, and intellectual leadership, provided by the successful candidate for this position.

Eligibility

This position is open to all eligible members of the community. To be an eligible member of the community you must be an Australian citizen. Applications may be accepted from Australian permanent residents who are in the process of acquiring Australian citizenship.

Notes

Selection for this position will be made on the basis of relative merit which will be assessed against each item of the selection criteria. Applications that do not address the selection criteria will not be considered for short listing by the Selection Committee. As part of the selection process the selection committee may invite candidates to undertake psychometric test, you should advise the selection committee if you have any special needs. Psychometric tests may be used as the initial short-listing test or later in the selection process. Some tests are very short while others may take one or more hours.
