Primary objective

Undertake research, management and development of one or more groups of terrestrial vertebrates in the Natural Science collections, that contributes to publications, exhibitions and public programs. Provide expert scientific advice for senior management, Commonwealth and NT Government Agencies, national and international museums, educational institutions, universities, private companies and the public.

Key responsibilities

  1. Provide strategic oversight of the maintenance, development, digitisation and access of MAGNT’s terrestrial vertebrate collections.

  2. Undertake research relevant to the Museum and Art Gallery’s natural science collections, including collections-based and field research as required, aimed at enhancing knowledge and understanding of the natural sciences of the Northern Territory and surrounding regions.

  3. Provide expert scientific advice and information to senior management, Commonwealth and NT Government Agencies, national and international museums, educational institutions, universities, private companies and the public.

  4. Provide expert knowledge and support related to the promotion of biodiversity and taxonomic study, aligned with relevant legislation and the protection of natural heritage.

  5. Build and maintain professional networks, partnerships and projects with external stakeholders, including other scientific organisations, community groups and researchers.

  6. Seek revenue sources for projects in the natural sciences and work closely with MAGNT’s Head of Science and Head of Engagement to strengthen relationships with Government (Commonwealth and Territory), industry, benefactors and sponsors.

  7. Provide expert taxonomic advice to the Government agencies on terrestrial vertebrates of biosecurity concern, including invasive species, and advice on control/eradication options and emergency control programs where required.
