Position Objective

Develop knowledge, awareness and relationships around the Pacific Cultures collection of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) through Pacific community engagement, research, cataloguing, interpretation of the collection, and exhibition scoping for the collection. Promote academic and general knowledge of Pacific cultures, within the Tasmanian community.
Working with the Pacific Island collection at TMAG and Pacific Island cultural groups research, identify, and update collection knowledge and documentation, build Pacific and Tasmanian community relationships, and scope future direction and projects.

Duties

  • Review and improve cataloging information for the Pacific Cultures collection, and prepare it for migration to the new TMAG Collections Management System.
  • Prepare an interpretation plan for the Pacific Cultures collection, including scoping potential exhibitions and other projects.
  • Contribute to the Indigenous Cultures Strategy for research, collection development and community engagement.
  • Foster effective relationships and meaningful engagement with Pacific island communities in Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, and locally and nationally, in relation to the Pacific collections held in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
  • Work with the Indigenous Cultures team at TMAG to manage and develop the Pacific Cultures collection in accordance with professional standards, current research trends, strategic priorities and cultural protocol.
  • Assist Pacific communities’ and researchers to access cultural materials held in the TMAG collection and respond to external enquiries.

Essential Requirements

Evidence of the following must be provided prior to appointment to this role:

  • Completion of an appropriate or related degree

The person must continue to satisfy the above essential requirements/qualifications throughout their employment in this role.

Desirable Requirements

  • Pacific island people, from Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia, are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.
  • Drivers Licence
