Duties
- Foster effective relationships and meaningful engagement with the Tasmanian Aboriginal community and other Indigenous peoples, including working with Repatriation.
- Manage and develop the Indigenous Cultures collection in accordance with professional standards, current research trends, strategic priorities and cultural protocol.
- Contribute to the collecting strategy, development, care, research and interpretation of the Museum’s Indigenous Cultures collections.
- Initiate, curate and manage exhibitions, Indigenous community engagement projects, public programs, digital and related projects (for example publications, documents, community outreach, oral histories and social media).
- Undertake curatorial research to expand knowledge of the Museum’s collections and registration activities associated with the Indigenous Cultures collections in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Assist Indigenous communities’ and researchers to access cultural materials held in the TMAG collection and respond to external enquiries.
- Provide specialist advice and recommendations on acquisitions, deaccessions and loans.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures, acquisition and other proposals for the Trustees and grant-giving bodies for the administration and development of collections.
- Work with, train and supervise employees and volunteers in collections, curatorial and public program projects when required.
- Continue to build professional knowledge, relationships with stakeholders and professional networks and expand TMAG’s community profile.
Essential Requirements
- The Head of the State Service has determined that this is an Aboriginal identified position and that the person nominated for this position is to meet the Tasmanian Government’s eligibility requirements in accordance with Employment Direction No. 10 – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment in the State Service before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer.
