Job Description
The Curator, Taonga Māori is a pivotal role unlocking the potential of Auckland Museum’s taonga Māori collection. This permanent, full-time role places the taonga Māori collections at the heart of the museum and prioritises their research, development, care and access. The postholder will enrich the content of the collection, undertake research, promote collection access, answer public enquiries and contribute to the development of exhibitions, gallery renewals and public programmes. This influential role works across many aspects of the museum’s core business, a primary focus over the next five years is a programme of gallery renewals including Māori Court.
Desired Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will offer:
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications (PhD preferred) or extensive equivalent experience in a relevant field
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of taonga Māori and evidence of specialist knowledge for one or more collections area
- Evidence of strong networks with the Māori community at both local and national levels
- Demonstrated experience in contributing to the development of public programmes and exhibitions in a museum context
- Understanding of the principles and practice of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the implications of this for the work of the museum
- Demonstrate proficiency in Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga
- Proven effective verbal and written communication skills, in addition to strong analytical and effective planning and time management skills
- The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends on occasion as required
- A collaborative approach and excellent interpersonal skills will be essential in dealing with diverse groups including community groups, the public, iwi and whanau, museum project teams, and across all tiers of the museum
