The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to over 300,000 visitors each year across six sites. MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory.

Its mission is ‘making sense of the world by discovering and interpreting the past and present for the future’. Primary Objective Provide high level vision and leadership and guide the strategic development and planning of MAGNT’s collections, research priorities, and interpretation projects. Develop audience focused projects and outcomes for the collections and initiate cross disciplinary curatorial activities.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide strategic integrated planning, advice, policy and reporting to ensure that an innovative and engaging cross disciplinary curatorial and collections program is offered that meets the needs of target audiences and MAGNT stakeholders.
  2. Lead the research, development and implementation of a plan for the strategic development of the MAGNT collections, publications, site interpretation, and digital and web based projects.
  3. Seek alternative modes of revenue for curatorial and collection projects and work closely with MAGNT’s Development Manager to strengthen relationships with benefactors and sponsors.
  4. Work closely with the Engagement and Exhibitions teams to ensure the highest quality programs are incorporated into MAGNT’s public offering.
  5. Lead and manage a high-performing curatorial team in the delivery of its functions and services through scheduling and prioritising work; monitoring and reviewing processes; providing performance feedback and staff learning and development opportunities; and ensuring that deadlines and budget commitments are met.
  6. Develop and implement appropriate short and long term planning activities to form the basis for allocation of resources and the prioritisation of budgets, projects and programs
  7. Maintain and promote EEO, cultural diversity, WH&S and ethical principles and practices.
  8. Develop and maintain professional networks and partnerships with external stakeholders including project partners, other cultural organisations, community groups and researchers.
