The Australian National Maritime Museum is the leading centre for maritime heritage in Australia, a commercial leader in the cultural sector and the only national cultural institution outside Canberra. The Museum leads the promotion, conservation and research of Australia’s maritime heritage and culture, positioning itself as a world leader in maritime education and research and engaging communities to enhance their appreciation of the importance of the oceans, seas and rivers to our past, present and future.

The Museum is preparing to embark on a major transformation program, encompassing significant capital works projects and commercial opportunities, organisation and cultural change programs and the delivery of innovative strategies to raise the Museum’s national and international profile and enhance visitor engagement.

Reporting to the Director/Chief Executive Officer, and as a member of the executive team, this newly-created role will play a critical part in shaping and implementing the strategic direction of the Museum and directing the Museum’s corporate priorities and business outcomes. The Deputy Director will lead a new Corporate Services Division amalgamating Finance, ICT, HR, Payroll and Records teams and will be accountable for providing expert financial advice, commercial acumen and workforce management capability to support the business transformation program. Accountabilities include implementing efficient financial strategies and controls across the Museum, including an effective financial planning, monitoring, forecasting, advisory and management framework; managing capital works and operating budgets, ensuring financial sustainability by supporting the growth of self-generated revenue and profitability, and delivering workplace reforms and technology innovation.

Sound CFO experience, CA/CPA qualifications and executive leadership of multi-disciplinary teams across a broad range of corporate services functions and activities is essential. You must also be able to demonstrate strategic leadership and proven ability to collaborate, mentor and influence across all levels of the organisation and to engage public and private sector stakeholders. Ideally your commercial acumen and problem solving capability will be underpinned by recent public sector experience, and/or an impressive record of achievement in contributing to strategic outcomes for cultural institutions.
