Position Description

The Museum is seeking an accomplished leader to manage the Programs and Engagement Division of the organisation, including exhibition projects, learning services and community outreach, digital and content services, and communications and marketing. Reporting directly to the Director of the Museum, the Deputy Director, Programs and Engagement will make a key contribution to the strategic management and future directions of the Museum and advise the Director and Council of the Museum on engagement, exhibitions, marketing and partnership issues. The Deputy Director will also play a lead role in positioning of the Museum as an internationally recognised cultural institution.

Responsibilities of the Position

The Deputy Director leads the Division and plays a key role as part of the Museum’s Executive Management Team. The Deputy Director will have a thorough understanding of the national and international context within which the Museum operates and the operational environment of a major collecting institution. The Deputy Director will also have strong financial and human resource management, relationship building, conceptual and analytical skills.

The Deputy Director will:

  1. Develop and implement policies, products and services that meet the Museum’s business objectives
  2. Plan and direct the activities of the Division
  3. Advise the Director and Council of the National Museum of Australia on engagement, exhibitions and other programs, and marketing and partnership issues
  4. Represent the Museum at high level negotiations and discussions with Government Departments and Authorities, cultural institutions, professional groups and the private sector on matters relating to the development and implementation of Museum plans, programs, products and services
  5. Contribute to the strategic planning process of the Museum, helping to set the future directions for the organisation
  6. Ensure the timely completion and delivery of all divisional projects and work plans on budget and to a high standard
  7. Ensure that employees are provided with sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to enable them to perform their duties safely.
