The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to over 300,000 visitors each year across six sites.

MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Its mission is ‘making sense of the world by discovering and interpreting the past and present for the future’.

Primary Objective

Develop and implement creative, high level design solutions for all MAGNT initiated projects, exhibitions and public programs including associated support material, publications, marketing and digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop creative graphic design concepts and solutions for all MAGNT projects ensuring brand consistency as well as innovative approaches to design within budgetary limitations.
  2. Co-ordinate the scheduling of design work across MAGNT; process work requests; liaise with internal clients.
  3. Manage proofing, design and production of print and digital materials including publications, brochures, advertising, signage, other museum collateral and the web site.
  4. Liaise with printers and fabricators; develop and maintain production forms, maintain production quality control and manage expenditure. Oversee contractors engaged in the production and installation of exhibitions and displays, ensuring that the contractors meet the required design specifications for materials produced and the actual installation.
  5. Liaise with creative agencies and provide written design briefs for new MAGNT exhibition projects.
  6. Develop design concepts, in accordance with the exhibition project brief, and prepare and present detailed design and drawing specifications in accordance with relevant codes for the production of exhibition hardware, furniture and original material supports.
  7. Resolve, in accordance with exhibition project briefs, the design integration of exhibition elements, such as graphics, objects, multimedia, lighting, interactives and ensure the design is appropriate for the display of collections and addresses different audience needs.
  8. Develop and maintain professional networks and partnerships with external stakeholders including project partners, media, sponsors, community groups and researchers.

Selection Criteria

  1. A tertiary degree in graphic or 3D design and experience coupled with extensive design experience using Adobe Creative Suite and Vectorworks or Auto Cad across Mac OS X platforms and/or PC platforms and experience  working within a museum or similar environment.
  2. Experience in designing exhibitions and a creative approach to design solutions across multiple platforms and a proven ability to combine conceptual and visual design elements to evoke an appropriate atmosphere to compliment specific exhibitions and facilitate the audience experience.
  3. Demonstrated experience in designing a wide range of publications including but not limited to; marketing collateral, online communications, event promotion/materials, on-site signage and exhibition displays.
  4. Extensive experience in controlling design and production of print publications including ability to conceptualise, plan, prepare briefs and specifications, select stock and liaise with printers through all stages of production.
  5. Experience in liaising with external suppliers and sound knowledge of procurement processes combined with ability to undertake production tasks such as processing orders, keeping records, maintaining files and databases.
  6. High level organisation skills, experience in establishing systems to support in-house design.  Sound motivation, initiative and commitment together with a demonstrated ability to manage workloads and prioritise to meet deadlines.
  7. Experience working in and an understanding of the requirements of audiences of cultural institutions, including ability to monitor and apply corporate style and branding.
  8. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and ensuring work health and safety system compliance.
