Auckland War Memorial Museum: Connecting through sharing stories of people, lands and seas

Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections, developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events, educational programmes and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories. We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.

We are looking for an entry level/entry level+ Developer to be a member of our small and dynamic Digital Platforms team. Our new Developer will work with our Senior Developer as well as our Information Technology and Digital Experience teams, along with a wide range of stakeholders, to create and support our digital platforms and help us on the exciting journey to redevelop our websites over the coming years.

Key responsibilities will be front end development as well as working with, and becoming a specialist in, our content management platforms, for both our onsite digital experiences and our online portfolio.

This is an exciting opportunity for an up-and-coming developer to make a huge difference at an iconic institution to enrich and enhance our online capability and support the delivery of amazing digital experiences.

Desired Skills and Experience

This is an entry level/entry level+ role, we do not expect applicants to have complete proficiency in all of the following skills, the right aptitude, and a willingness to learn are equally as important as the skills and experience you have.

You will bring with you:

  • A love for Museums and the absolute willingness to have fun and enjoy your job
  • Proficiency in web mark-up, including HTML5, CSS3
  • Strong JavaScript skills: experience with ES6+, frameworks React or Vue.js
  • Understanding of server-side CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS
  • Experience with cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility issues
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices in the software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • A flexible and dedicated problem solver
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal.

Experience with the following technologies and capabilities will be of benefit:

  • Familiarity with the Jamstack movement
  • Good in Headless CMS, familiar with GraphQL
  • Experience with Static Site Generators like Gatsby, Next, Jekyll, Hugo
  • Experience with assistive technology (e.g., screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition) in conducting accessibility testing
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in front-end architecture, including performance optimization, accessibility, and usability.
