The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to over 300,000 visitors each year across six sites.

MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. MAGNT has received funding from the Ian Potter Foundation for a project to increase the quantity of high quality digital images of collection objects in order to make the collection accessible online.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Undertake complex and creative photography and create high quality digital files from a wide range of slides, glass plates, artworks, printed, original and 3-D objects, using a range of digitisation devices, to support the MAGNT Digital Data Ready Project and the broader work of the organisation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Use a range of professional capture devices, lighting and associated software applications to produce high quality digital images of collection items, ensuring that technical specifications, service standards and business targets are met.
  2. Process, colour manage, name and create derivatives of digital image files in line with established standards and specifications.
  3. Undertake art directed and complex creative studio and location photography to meet corporate needs, including media, publication, marketing, architecture, workplace and exhibition documentation photography.
  4. In association with the Registrar, fulfil internal and external client requests for digital images from the Library’s collections.
  5. Use the Digital Asset Management System and associated workflow tools to facilitate quality assurance and ingestion of files into the Library’s digital asset repository.
  6. Maintain knowledge of rapidly changing technical developments in photography and digital imaging and provide analysis, evaluation and advice on the acquisition and use of specialist equipment including colour management systems and imaging computers.
  7. Undertake a range of administrative duties to support the management of images at MAGNT and the work of the Collection Management team.
  8. Develop and maintain professional networks and partnerships with external stakeholders including project partners, community groups and researchers.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in photography and/or significant experience in complex, creative and corporate photography and in reformatting of 3D, printed, fragile and original materials using a range of professional scanners, photographic and digital equipment.
  2. High level knowledge of colour management, digital file management and significant experience using camera capture, image processing and other related software programs on Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
  3. Manual dexterity, normal colour vision, attention to detail and significant experience in the handling and care of 3D, printed, fragile and original materials.
  4. Highly developed communication and networking skills at the institutional, government and community levels.
  5. An ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures and a sound understanding of Work Health Safety (WHS) practises to ensure WHS system compliance.
