Auckland War Memorial Museum: Connecting through sharing stories of people, lands and seas

Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections, developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibitions, events, educational programmes and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories. We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.

 Job Description

About the role:

It’s not every day a role like this comes up where you’ll be gathering and sharing stories as wide-ranging as recent fossil discoveries, shark specimen preservation, waka restoration, accounts of war from a Vietnam War veteran, or encouraging the public to come and visit the Museum to see real T. rex or a new photography exhibition (to name just a few examples!). Take a look at our social channels and our website, and you’ll see the breadth and variety of the types of content we cover.

The key responsibilities:

  • Plan, deploy and monitor organic social media content across Auckland Museum’s channels
  • Contribute to audience growth, engagement and retention across our owned channels
  • Work with a broad range of stakeholders within the Museum to find and draw out stories our audiences will love, then take ownership of getting the required assets, drafting content and seeking relevant approval
  • Adopting our tone of voice, take the lead on community engagement across Facebook, Instagram, Google, YouTube and Tiktok, which includes responding to all direct messages and replying to comments when appropriate
  • Learn our website Content Management System, so you can support the team in the development of website pages and updates. This includes editing supplied copy, and occasionally writing copy, as well as sourcing and cropping images.
  • Plan and deploy content across our onsite digital signage within the Museum building, using a Content Management System

Desired Skills and Experience

We’re after a tech-savvy yet creative digital marketing professional with 1 – 2 years experience in a similar role, who is able to both produce well-written, compelling content and deploy this across a range of systems from Gain (social scheduling) to our Content Management System (currently Kentico) to deploy content.

You’ll be detail-oriented, making sure dates and links are accurate, and that no tohutō is ever missing. We’re seeking someone who’ll be confident in making suggested edits and proposing layouts for web pages, and who is able to communicate effectively with a wide range of internal stakeholders who could be anyone from a Curator to a Collection Care Manager to a Public Programme Content Specialist or Retail Manager.

Organisational skills are key, as you’ll need to make sure that our weekly content calendar is prepped and ready, community engagement is timely, that digital signage is updated to reflect what’s on within the Museum on any given day, and that website content updates are carried out in priority order.

You will bring with you:

  • 1 – 2 years experience in a similar role
  • Organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your workload across a range of tasks at any given time
  • Confidence to engage with stakeholders across the organisation in a professional and enthusiastic manner, and to run our weekly content planning sessions
  • Creativity when it comes to crafting copy for posts and web pages, and an eye for design when it comes to selecting and cropping images for web templates and selecting the best widgets to use when building out web pages
  • Technical skills to be able to pick up any system quickly, whether it’s a social scheduling tool, a content planning platform, a website content management system or an analytics tool
