About the Role
The purpose of this position is to manage the overall digitisation effort for Cultural Collections, overseeing the creation of a meaningful and sensitive digital record of the Museums’ First Nations, Archaeology, Pasifika and Library, Archives and World Collections. Providing oversight for the use and relevance of the Cultural Collections and supporting the achievement of Australian Museum strategic objectives.
Key accountabilities
- Facilitate the digitisation of meta data, photographs and First Nations & Pasifika knowledges sought from community into Museum records
- Managing database clean-up tasks, and ensuring that data is entered consistently, and following established standards
- Applying a user-centred approach to access of objects ensuring the records can be presented publicly through the online collection search and webpages where appropriate
- Ensure records align with consultation outcomes and ICIP protocols on cultural collections and where necessary on Library and Archive collections
- Direct and manage the work of photographers and technical officers as they come onto the project
- Maintain accurate and up to date records and deliver clear and timely reporting
- Understand technical requirements of Museum collections and record keeping systems.
- Maintain technical knowledge of developments in photography, video and digital imaging to enhance skills, enable effective and identify opportunities to improve existing processes
- Awareness of loans and acquisitions within the Cultural Collections, Archives and Library to amend plans to allow for these operations
- Collaboration across branches to create a successful digitisation process
- Adhere to all obligations, responsibilities and legislative requirements under current Work Health & Safety (WHS) Acts and Regulations, ensuring all areas under supervision are monitored for WH&S risks and hazards and are reviewed regularly
Essential Requirements
- Sound, contemporary industry knowledge and demonstrated experience in the field of cultural collections and digitisation.
- Team management experience.
- Relevant degree related to the key accountabilities listed above, e.g. Museum and Heritage Studies, Digitisation and Computing etc.
- Experience using museum databases, particularly KE EMu.
- Experience in consultation with First Nations communities.
- Ability to work across three different Museum sites based throughout Sydney.
- NSW Driver Licence
Knowledge & Experience
- High level of knowledge and experience with colour management, metadata, Museum collection databases and processing software
- Experience in collection management and care, particularly relating to cultural collections
- Experience working with Museum Library and Archives collections
- Knowledge in best practice for Museum cultural collections including Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Protocols.
