Digitisation & Technical Support Officer, Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) Australia

Australia’s largest public museum organisation is seeking a Digitisation & Technical Support Officer to digitise the biodiversity literature in Australia’s library collections as part of the global Biodiversity Heritage Library project.

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is the world’s largest online repository of biodiversity heritage literature and archival materials. The project consists of over 500 organisations around the world digitising the biodiversity literature in their collections to make the foundation of our biodiversity knowledge freely accessible for everyone. Museums Victoria hosts the Australian branch of this global project, BHL Australia, which digitises library materials on behalf of 40 contributing organisations across the country.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The purpose of this position is to digitise library and archive materials in Australian collections and to maintain the files and equipment that underpin the operations of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) project at Museums Victoria.

The position is accountable for creating complete, high quality, digital versions of books, journals and other items, and for assisting to make these items openly accessible online.

Duties 

  1. Participate in the day-to-day operations of the BHL digitisation operation, including scanning, image post-processing, file management and team communication. This will include working with rare and fragile materials.
  2. Assist BHL volunteers in their contribution to the above work.
  3. Perform quality assurance on digitised material to ensure that the output conforms to agreed standards.
  4. Maintain the digitisation equipment and software and ensure that is in serviceable condition.
  5. Maintain digitisation and post-processing documentation to ensure it is kept up to date.
  6. Maintain technical aspects of the digitisation process, such as managing disk space.
  7. Assist with management of workflow and improvement of processes to ensure continuous improvement of the digitisation operation.
  8. Comply with Museums Victoria’s policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations

Note: The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, but within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Demonstrated experience working with digitisation equipment, particularly relating to literature digitisation.
  2. Excellent computer skills and demonstrated experience using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets).
  3. Good organisation skills and demonstrated ability to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manger with a high attention to detail.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, within an IT environment.
  5. An interest in library, museum and herbaria collections.
  6. The successful applicant is required to undergo, and for new employees meet the cost of, a National Police Records Check.
