The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is known and celebrated nationally and internationally for our collections and expertise in Aboriginal cultures, natural sciences, histories and arts across Northern and Central Australia and our neighbours to the north.

Our principal facility since 1981 is on Larrakia Land at Bullocky Point in Darwin, home to internationally renowned cultural and scientific collections and research and exhibition programs.

MAGNT operates the historic Fannie Bay Gaol in Darwin, the Museum of Central Australia in Alice Springs which incorporates the Strehlow Research Centre, Megafauna Central and the Alcoota Fossil Bed site north east of Alice Springs.

MAGNT also manages the historic Lyons Cottage on Darwin’s Esplanade and the Defence of Darwin Experience at East Point in Darwin.

The last 10 years have been very significant for MAGNT with the recognition in 2014 of its importance to Territorian’s with the regaining of its statutory authority status with the Northern Territory Government and the subsequent formation of the Board of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

This new status allowed MAGNT to focus on stakeholder relationships and secure increased funding from governments, philanthropists and corporate sources along with the creation of new specialist positions at MAGNT and the delivery of award winning exhibitions.

In 2017, in collaboration with the Northern Territory Government, the State Square Art Gallery was announced as part of the Government’s Darwin City Revitalisation and 10 Year Museums Master Plan.

Planning and approvals are now underway with this new $50m world-class facility set for delivery in 2024-25.

In 2021 the MAGNT Board commissioned and adopted a new robust Strategic Plan to 2030 which outlines MAGNT’s vision, values and focus areas to achieve organisational growth into the future.

This is an extremely exciting time for all of us at the MAGNT as we embark on the next significant stage of our evolution. We are looking for a new Director to continue and further develop MAGNT’s footprint, operations, collections, exhibitions and research as we connect people to the stories of the Norther Territory.
