Auckland War Memorial Museum (Auckland Museum) is seeking applications for the senior leadership role of Director of Public Experience (DPE).

The DPE is an exciting customer-centric role, responsible for leading all the public programmes, events, exhibitions, gallery displays, production (including audio visual, display and lighting), education, digital experience and community engagement for the Auckland Museum. The remit for this executive role is broad and complex, offering a senior leader and creative professional the strategic bandwidth to make their mark and enhance the public’s experience of Auckland Museum onsite, off-site and online.

The DPE leads with a continuous improvement mind-set to enhance the quality, added value, responsiveness and public appeal of the Public Programme.

The DPE is responsible for the development and organisational delivery of a public programme and content that:

  • Brings to life the Museum’s mission, vision and brand;
  • Is vibrant and enticing, and of high quality expanding our audiences;
  • Is strong at our core on-site, shared and connected through digital channels, and alive in Auckland’s diverse communities;
  • Opens up access to, and generates understanding of, the collections;
  • Fosters participation, collaboration and contribution;
  • Ensures memorable and inspiring experiences;
  • Represents, reflects and responds to the distinctiveness of Tamaki Makaurau and its peoples;
  • Delivers He Korahi Maori and Teu le Va.

The DPE will contribute to the executive leadership team, in particular partnering with the Director of Collections to design programming that celebrates the collections and highlights their significance and with the Director BEAT to develop quality customer-facing initiatives and products for local and tourism markets. This leader will have to manage key relationships with stakeholders across the public and private sector, particularly engaging with different communities and being the Museum’s lead contact for the Young Persons’ Advisory Group. The DPE will be delivery-focused, an exceptional leader of people, empowering a highly-engaged and capable team to keep up the momentum of the Museum’s transformation.
