The Australian Museum (AM) was founded in 1827 as the first museum in Australia. This year marks the 190th anniversary and it is an exciting time to join with significant transformation programs, including the development of the Master Plan, being undertaken to firmly establish the AM as one of the leading natural history and culture museums in the world.
We are seeking a dynamic individual with an exceptional track record in leading in public engagement and exhibitions for local and/or international Museums. About the role:
The Director, Public Engagement & Exhibitions oversees the development and delivery of public programs, local and touring exhibitions, school and education initiatives, visitor engagement initiatives, and community partnerships to support the strategic direction, growth and financial stability of the Museum. The role leads a team that drives the development and implementation of exceptional exhibition-based Museum programs, on-site, online and through outreach programs.
As the Director, Public Engagement & Exhibitions you will:
- Contribute to the Museum’s business and strategy by setting key priorities and targets and advocating new approaches to public access programs, visitor engagement and strategic community partnerships to establish the Museum as one of the leading natural history and culture museums in the world
- Develop and implement the Audience Engagement Strategy, integrating Museum-wide programs and services, exhibitions and public programs that are at the forefront of digital technologies, to achieve visitor growth, and increased revenue.
- Develop, implement and source business opportunities to produce a robust temporary exhibition schedule for both local and international markets to position the Australian Museum at the forefront of natural history and cultural experiences
- Develop and implement all education programs and activities, ensuring that these are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and Museum’s Education Strategy.
- Manage, collaborate with and facilitate the building of productive relationships with external stakeholders, government agencies and community groups to partner in public engagement, including education and exhibition projects
- Oversee the Division ensuring the development of staff and contractors, culture and systems are consistent with Museum directions, budget and fiscal accountabilities, and operational environment to ensure the Division maintains a consistently high service performance.
