Museums Victoria seeks a Director Research & Collections to provide strategic leadership and advice to the CEO, Board and Museums Victoria generally to ensure that the organisations collections and research programs effectively enhance, support and protect Museums Victoria’s cultural assets.

Museums Victoria cares for the State scientific and cultural collections, providing visitor access, activities and events at five distinct venues:  Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks, IMAX Cinema and world heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building.

Museums Victoria forms part of the Victorian State Government culture and international arts and is embarking on a bold period of change focusing on being a leader in the museums sector and enhancing the visitor experience.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

This position is accountable for developing and communicating key messages to target audiences, establishing goodwill and building a positive image and understanding between the Museum and stakeholders.

Notable skills and experiences:

  1. An appropriate postgraduate qualification plus experience in, or understanding of, a research, cultural environment or academic entity
  2. Able to support and make a strong contribution to the Executive Management priorities and obligations, to ensure that Museums Victoria’s goals and objectives are met
  3. A dynamic and proactive leadership style capable of effectively initiating and carrying through significant programs of change
  4. Proven record in strategic planning and effective resource management in a diverse, networked organisation
  5. Ability to motivate, encourage, and direct the efforts of others towards the completion of plans and achievement of determined objectives in an environment which provides ongoing personal development opportunities and appropriate performance management for individuals
  6. An excellent consultative, communication and influencing style which encourages responsibility and innovation in others, coupled with a high degree of diplomacy and integrity
  7. Able to develop a culture of open communication between all staff and encourage relevant contact between all levels to achieve a process of continuous improvement
  8. Negotiation, advocacy, liaison and persuasive skills which are applied particularly in the resolution of conflict in a range of commercial, industrial and political situations to achieve the best possible results for Museums Victoria whilst fulfilling equity and social justice requirements
  9. Ability to manage a complex and diverse range of functional activities and to analyse and solve complex problems
  10. A willingness to accept autonomy and responsibility
  11. Extensive networks within Government, business and the cultural sector
  12. Capacity to establish and develop effective relationships with customers
  13. Understanding of the research environment and external funding bodies
  14. Understanding of target markets and product development processes to facilitate the development of exhibitions which enhance the visitor experience
  15. Understanding of collection care and management
  16. Awareness of museum developments nationally and internationally
