Teaching in the 1850S Join us in January 2018 teaching in the world-famous Sovereign Hill Costumed Schools program. If you have a love for Australian history, are happy to don 1850s costume and ‘perform’ in historically correct ways, this may be the job for you!

Due to growth of the education program, an opportunity exists for an experienced educator to join the team.

The Sovereign Hill Costumed Schools cater for Primary students (mainly Year 5 and 6) from Victoria and interstate. Each visiting class of children and their teachers partake in an extensive, sustained role-play experience over two days. This active learning is enhanced through wearing of period costume by children and teachers alike.

The Costumed Schools team teach in five school buildings, each representing a different educational experience. This position will teach initially in the St Alipius’ Diggings School but may in future teach in the Red Hill National School, the St Peter’s Denominational School, the Wesleyan Day School and the Ballarat Benevolent Asylum Ragged School.

The all-enveloping atmosphere of Sovereign Hill aims to immerse the children in the customs, beliefs, attitudes and values of the people of the mid-19th century gold rushes who came from many parts of the world expecting to make a better life for themselves.

The School curriculum is based partly on the Irish National System of Education then common to all schools in Victoria. It encompasses proficiency in Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, and a good general knowledge of Geography, Science and handcrafts.

Underpinning the academic knowledge gained are the equally important aspects of understanding and appreciating the social expectations and etiquette of the period. The whole experience provides a basis on which to build comparison of the student’s current lives with those of 1850s students.

We are particularly seeking an educator with specialist skills in History, especially Australian History. Classroom experience in schools is ideal but experience in other educational settings may be relevant. You will have a deep understanding of program development and application of the Victorian Curriculum.
