In May 2017, the Council received a cultural strategy prepared by Robyn Archer. The strategy introduced the concept of culture being the overall encompassing feeling that visitors and residents associate with their experience from a place. This expands the concept of culture to encompass a wide range of arts, community, and sporting activities that make up the sense of place.

In this newly formed department and role, the initial focus will be to finalise the cultural strategy. The context of the cultural strategy is to address all the things that make a place attractive to visit and live in, which is adopted by the Council. The role will undertake key objectives to fulfil the cultural strategy and requires a flexible and dynamic approach in order to ensure the agreed strategy is fulfilled.

The primary aims of the position will be to expand on the work already undertaken, to position Launceston and the Tamar Valley as a cultural destination and to proactively leverage opportunities from cultural assets and the arts to realise current untapped potential for the municipality and the region.
