The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool, the Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is of international renown as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history.  In all, some 350 staff work to bring our goldrush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

The role sits within the Collections and Curatorial team whose primary purpose is to collect, conserve, research, and interpret the significance of the Victorian gold rush and the changes brought by it in Ballarat’s social, cultural, economic, political and technological heritage. The team cares, manages and provides access to a collection of more than 150,000 objects, including many objects of national and international significance across multiple sites.

About the role:

The Exhibit Support Officer is responsible for maintaining a high standard of presentation and care for both static and activated buildings and exhibits in the museum.  This is a part time role (28 hours per week), which requires availability over weekends, school and public holidays.

Major activities will include:

  • Using appropriate methods and materials, maintain and clean exhibits across the three museum sites, (Outdoor Museum, Gold Museum & Narmbool), that will contribute to the historical context of The Sovereign Hill Museums Association
  • Maintain and clean exhibits to a high level in line with best museum practice across the three museum sites
  • Move collection objects safely around the museum locations as required
  • Assist with auditing exhibit objects and locations across the museum
  • Contribute and assist in planning cleaning schedules and the documentation of completed cleaning tasks as required

To be successful in this role you should have:

  • Experience cleaning in a museum or gallery setting or similar
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Pleasant outgoing personality and the ability to deal with the general public
  • Ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment
  • Ability and willingness to work across flexible rosters including weekends, public holidays and school holidays if required
