The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to approximately 300,000 visitors each year. MAGNT became a statutory authority on 01 July 2014.

MAGNT’s vision is to be a world-class museum connecting people and stories of the Northern Territory. Our role is both as a museum and art gallery with collections, exhibitions and programs across our core areas of Aboriginal culture, natural sciences, history and art focussing on Northern and Central Australia and our near neighbours.

MAGNT currently operates the museum and gallery at Bullocky Point, the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre) and the Alcoota fossil site.

Primary Objective:
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Corporate Services, this position will lead, direct and coordinate the delivery of financial management services for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and oversee the finance team.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the development and implementation of, and provide high level strategic advice on, financial management strategies, practices and systems within relevant legislation, government accounting standards, Treasury circulars and budget parameters.
  2. Provide leadership and vision that supports innovation and efficient and effective work practices, including mentoring and developing staff.
  3. Meet MAGNT’s reporting requirements, internally and externally, including financial reports to management, executive and Board and preparation of the annual financial statements.
  4. In collaboration with managers and the executive, prepare the annual budget and forward financial estimates and forecasts.
  5. Ensure appropriate corporate governance standards are maintained and statutory obligations are fulfilled.
  6. Oversee taxation requirements and develop and implement taxation strategies to ensure that taxation obligations in relation to GST, FBT and payroll tax are met.
  7. Review and maintain financial policy controls, systems and processes and implement appropriate changes to improve outcomes.
  8. Process the fortnightly payroll for Board staff (currently 28 staff).
  9. Oversee and supervise the financial and administrative support staff, including contract security teams.
