The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to approximately 300,000 visitors each year.
MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Its mission is ‘making sense of the world by discovering and interpreting the past and present for the future’. MAGNT became a statutory authority on 01 July 2014.
MAGNT has recently commenced planning towards the launch of a world class art museum in central Darwin. The Chan will be the seventh venue of MAGNT, alongside MAGNT at Bullocky Point, the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre) and the Alcoota fossil site.
Primary Objective:
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Corporate Services, this position will lead, direct and coordinate the delivery of financial management services for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and oversee the finance team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and implementation of, and provide high level strategic advice on, financial management strategies, practices and systems within relevant legislation, government accounting standards, Treasury circulars and budget parameters.
- Provide leadership and vision that supports innovation and efficient and effective work practices, including mentoring and developing staff.
- Meet MAGNT’s reporting requirements, internally and externally, including financial reports to management, executive and Board and preparation of the annual financial statements.
- In collaboration with managers and the executive, prepare the annual budget and forward financial estimates and forecasts.
- Ensure appropriate corporate governance standards are maintained and statutory obligations are fulfilled.
- Oversee taxation requirements and develop and implement taxation strategies to ensure that taxation obligations in relation to GST, FBT and payroll tax are met.
- Review and maintain financial policy controls, systems and processes and implement appropriate changes to improve outcomes.
- Oversee and supervise the financial and administrative support staff, including contract security teams.
Selection Criteria:
Essential
- Accounting or business management qualifications and experience in financial management, annual financial statement preparation, analytical and advisory functions commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
- Strong leadership and relationship management skills with the ability to strengthen a culture of financial accountability and transparency.
- Sound strategic, conceptual, analytical and collaborative skills including the ability to interpret and manage the organisational environment.
- Extensive knowledge of accrual accounting concepts and principles and financial management practices, preferably in a public sector environment.
- Excellent organisational skills with demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, set priorities and work under pressure to meet conflicting deadlines for a diverse range of activities across key areas of MAGNT operations
- High level oral and written communication skills with proven ability to write reports, policy papers, briefing notes and other correspondence in an environment requiring performance of multiple tasks and adherence to deadlines.
- Energetic, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable with a sense of humour, able to multi-task and work independently in a hands-on work environment.
- A team player with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others.
- An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

- Membership of a recognised Australian accounting body
- Experience and knowledge of Northern Territory government systems including PIPS, GAS, BOXI, TRIM
