Responsible for management and oversight of the day to day performance of the museum’s finance function, and contributing to the development and implementation of the museum’s financial strategy. The role will operate largely autonomously, under the direction of the Head of Finance.

The key duties of the position include:

  • Manage all aspects of financial performance and reporting, including with responsibility for the delivery of transactional accounting (inc. AP/AR, payroll, capital works and fixed asset register), month/year end close (inc. journals, reconciliations and variance/exceptions analysis), and treasury and cash management function (inc. banking and investments).
  • Manage all aspects of financial planning & budgeting, including coordination and development of internal and external operating, capital and project budgets, at the whole of museum and operational business area levels.
  • Deliver the museum’s and foundation’s annual financial statements, including interpretation of accounting standards (inc. fixed asset valuation/impairment testing and revenue recognition), implementation of commonwealth government accounting policies and practices, and external audit liaison with the ANAO.
  • Manage external financial and risk reporting and compliance obligations, including various Commonwealth government requirements (inc. financial planning and performance, questions on notice and portfolio returns) and taxation with the ATO (inc. GST; FBT; PAYG).
  • Implement risk management and compliance practices, including maintaining key policies and procedures (inc. fraud, risk management and procurement) and meeting insurance obligations with Comcover (exc. workers’ compensation requirements with Comcare).
  • Develop and/or review business cases, project budgets and other planning and delivery documents, to champion and support major projects and business initiatives.
  • Drive improvements in business performance, monitoring and design, including streamlining procedures and processes, system optimisation/replacement and greater coordination across the museum’s corporate services and broader business.
  • Represent the museum with internal and external stakeholders, including the museum’s audit committee, internal and external auditors, and other commercial and government entities (inc. insurers, portfolio and finance departments and independent valuers).
  • Provide regular assistance to the Chief Financial Officer, Head of Finance and museum executive on a variety of financial matters.
  • Fulfil the key competencies of the classification of this position as defined and described by the Integrated Leadership System (ILS).
  • Any other lawful and reasonable request made within this position.

Eligibility

  • At least three (3) years’ experience in a similar role, managing an entity’s day to day finance function, and implementing an entity’s financial strategies and objectives.
  • Professional accounting qualification – Chartered Accountant (CA); Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) or equivalent as appropriate.
  • Proven financial and business acumen, including as it relates to developing strategic and operational plans, managing risk and driving business efficiency and improvement
  • Extensive knowledge of Australian accounting standards (particularly as they relate to not‑for‑profit and government entities) and taxation legislation (inc. GST; FBT; PAYG)
  • Broad experience and capability with a variety of financial software and other specialised applications, including demonstrated ability to undertake system optimisation, upgrade and/or replacement.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively, provide exemplary leadership and manage multiple staff.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to convey information to both financial and non‑financial audiences at all levels of an organisation, including governing bodies
