The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for-profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool, the Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is internationally renowned as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our gold-rush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

About the role:

The First Nations Cultural Officer is responsible for developing partnerships and leading the design and delivery of programs that engage schools and the public with First Nations histories and culture across our museum sites.  The role involves working closely with the Sovereign Hill Education and Events Teams and associated internal and external Key Stakeholders.

Tasks will include:

  • Working as part of the Education team and in collaboration with key stakeholders to research, devise and deliver high-quality formal and informal education programs and initiatives for school and community audiences onsite, online and offsite.
  • Develops collaborative partnership with Traditional Owners, key stakeholders and other First Nations communities to develop and deliver learning programs, materials and events
  • Working with the SHMA Events and Programs Team, provide input and guidance into the design and delivery of First Nations public engagement, which may include a wide range of interpretive activities and materials, including programs, performances, workshops, commissions, masterclasses, and talks, brochures, signage.
  • Participate in networks and partnerships with external organisations engaged in learning and teaching about First Nations culture, including other cultural organisations and learning organisations.
  • Liaise with First Nations communities to create pathways to participation in museum activities, including co-designed programs and initiatives.
  • Participate and engage with the Sovereign Hill Museums Association’s First Nations Working Group, including providing support and advice in relation to the SHMA First People’s Roadmap
To be successful in the role, applicants should be able to demonstrate their experience with:

  • Knowledge of the cultural protocols necessary for the effective communication and interpretation of First Nations cultural heritage and/or contemporary cultural expressions in a public setting, or the ability to quickly acquire.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practice and communities locally and nationally.
  • Experience in developing and delivering First Nations programs and engaging First Nations communities for a cultural organisation or similar.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, the principles and processes of education and/or interpretive visitor programs in a museum or similar setting, or the ability to quickly acquire.
  • Familiarity with the Australian Curriculum and educational practices, or the ability to quickly acquire
