About the Australian Museum
The Australian Museum (AM) is located on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. The AM acknowledges the Gadigal people as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land, sky and waterways, paying respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
The AM operates within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and was founded in 1827 and is the first museum in Australia. The AM provides access, engagement and scientific research to increase our understanding of natural history and culture, particularly of the Australasian region. The AM holds more than 21 million objects of biological, geological and cultural collections and develops programs, exhibitions and school and community education initiatives onsite, online and offsite.
The AM’s mission is to ignite wonder, inspire debate and drive change.
It’s an exciting time to work within the AM’s education team as we work towards delivering two new initiatives. The first initiative will inform the development of new in-exhibition programs and the second is a new learning space informed by First Nations knowledge systems and the Australian Museum’s own scientific research. We’re after an energetic and talented First Nations educator to join our team and lead key learning projects.

About the role
The First Nations Education Project Officer will work within the Education team and collaborate with staff across the Museum (including Programming, Exhibitions, Collections) to research, develop, and oversee delivery of a range of education programs for groups visiting the Museum, and to support student and teacher learning online and onsite. The successful candidate will have expertise in informal and formal program development and delivery for a range of diverse audiences, especially early years and primary school-aged students. The Education Project Officer will be involved in other learning initiatives across the Museum and beyond, such as digital learning, accessibility, and exhibition-related work.

Essential Requirements
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent – Aboriginality/Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications, preferably in education, and experience devising and delivering learning programs in a museum or cultural institution.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and an interest in natural history, First Nations cultures, and the environment.
- Hold a valid NSW Working with Children clearance
- The successful applicant will be subject to a national criminal records check.
