The Head of Art position demands a leader with extensive professional experience as a curator, researcher and writer in Australian art. They will have an empathy with the Memorial’s mission and its art collection, and be able to lead the Art Section in delivering corporate outcomes. Key results include: leading a team of curators in researching, writing about, developing and managing the Memorial’s significant Art collection; as well as providing advice to corporate management, the Memorial’s Council and government; leading the Section’s corporate business, representing the Memorial as an expert in this field and in liaison and negotiations with clients, artists and stakeholders.

Notes:

  • Tertiary qualifications in the field of Art, Museum Studies, Cultural Heritage, or other relevant discipline; highly desirable.
  • This is a security assessed position, the occupant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.

Responsibilities:
1) Lead the team:

  • to enhance the Memorial’s existing body of research and writing on the art collection;
  • provide professional curatorial input to corporate programs; and
  • present a high level professional profile within the arts community and the Australian community in general.

2) Provide leadership in delivering the Art Section’s corporate business outcomes, including:

  • curatorial advice on public programs including Memorial exhibitions;
  • development of specific art exhibitions, catalogues and publications;
  • business planning, budgets and staffing;
  • advice to senior management, Council and Government as required; and
  • representing the Memorial and liaise with other agencies and community groups.

3) Develop and manage the Art collection according to sound museum practice and in accordance with the Memorial’s role as the national commemorative institution.

4) Abide by and promote the principles and practices of Work Health and Safety as outlined in the WHS Act, taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and ensuring that your acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons.
