The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial’s purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war or on operational service and those who have served our nation in times of conflict. Its mission is leading remembrance and understanding of Australia’s wartime experience.

The Australian War Memorial personally and powerfully commemorates the role Australian service men and women have played in diverse theatres of war and operations over more than a century. The Memorial is a special place, being the heart of the nation for veterans, Defence service personnel and all Australians to remember and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society. The Memorial is also undertaking a Development Project adding significant new galleries and visitor spaces to the precinct which will form part of our continuing story in commemorating service and sacrifice.

This is a hands-on, diverse role that requires experience within all aspects of communications and marketing for the Memorial including the Development Project. Exceptional writing, strong media relations, innovative delivery and a process approach along with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system expertise for excellent stakeholder engagement are key. You will work closely with the Director, Branch Head of Public Programs. Executive Program Director. Development and the senior management team to deliver an integrated marketing communications strategy.

This position requires professional and proven leadership experience across all marketing and communications functions. These include: public affairs, online engagement, branding, development of sponsorships and partnerships, loyalty (Friends of the Memorial) and CRM system programs. As Head of the Communications and Marketing Section you will provide leadership for all the Memorial’s marketing and communications activities both nationally and internationally. You will lead a small diverse team in positioning the Memorial as the commemorative heart of the nation during this significant period.

This position requires an experienced communicator and highly effective person to identify and develop public relations and integrated marketing opportunities leveraging partnerships and networks within the tourism and communication industries, ensuring the Memorial’s high public profile is maintained.

Core Responsibilities

  • Under broad direction provide leadership in and undertake a combination of management administration tasks and strategic planning focused on the provision of marketing and communications.
  • Manage the resources of the section including staff performance and budgets, to deliver against the Memorial’s corporate plan and the section’s business plan.
  • Provide advice to the Director and senior management on matters relevant to the profile and brand of the Memorial including the Development Project.
  • Ensure the Memorial’s positive public profile is maintained by effective monitoring and management of public relations and stakeholder issues.
  • Experience in developing innovative opportunities through the media and potential marketing partners including tourism authorities and other agencies.
  • Provide strategic direction in the development, implementation and evaluation of marketing communication strategies that promote the Memorial’s profile.
  • Provide strategic direction for online communication and engagement through Digital Experience team.
  • Provide direction in developing partnership opportunities including stakeholder engagement and management.
