Te Papa’s mission is to understand the past, enrich the present and meet the challenges of the future. Te Papa is more than just the national museum that houses New Zealand’s treasures. It is a meeting place, a place for lifelong learning, and a place that inspires a sense of wonder and connection.

The Audience and Insight Directorate leads an integrated approach across the organisation to how our visitor-facing activities connect people, taonga and stories. Audience-centric and strongly collaborative, the directorate brings together the activities of programme development, audience research and evaluation, marketing and communications, digital strategy, and content and exhibition design.

What you will do:

Reporting to our Director Audience & Insight, this senior position is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of Te Papa’s audience insights methodology. Working with external suppliers as required, you will ensure market and audience research is conducted to inform programme planning and our understanding of our onsite and online visitors, and that we are regularly evaluating the reach and impact of our work and feeding these insights back into planning and decision-making.

You will stay on top of developments in research methodologies and trends in museum audience engagement, and share this knowledge with colleagues. At all times, you will proactively be seeking and championing ways to better understand our audiences and the outcomes of our work.

You will manage a small team made up of our Audience Insights Advisor and a pool of research assistants. You will also maintain strong relationships with external suppliers and partners.

About you:

Our Head of Audience Insights will be a seasoned leader, with deep experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. You will possess an analytical and detail-oriented mind-set, matched with strong communication and presentation skills. You will be comfortable presenting to many different audiences (including executives) and making your data and insights useful to people with various levels of audience insight expertise.

Te Papa is a bicultural institution, and you will demonstrate your commitment to this kaupapa in all aspects of your work. We have a commitment to fostering Māori and Pacific audiences over the next five years, and you will play a leadership role in this mahi.

You will work with many stakeholders from internal creative teams to external market research specialists, so it is critical that you are able to work collaboratively and effectively with a broad range of people. Working at Te Papa also means that you need to have a clear understanding of the role of museums as a provider of information and learning opportunities, and as a modern visitor attraction.

You will have strong planning and time management skills, demonstrated experience managing budgets, and a well-developed ability to balance competing priorities. As the leader of a small and focused team, you will set work priorities, foster staff development and champion audience-centric approaches.
