The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool and soon to be opened Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush.

We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is internationally renowned as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our gold-rush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

About the role:

The Head of Events is responsible for working across the organisation and with external partners to develop and deliver a fast-paced, engaging and sustainable program of events for visitors.  The role reports to and collaborates closely with the Chief Operations Officer to develop and oversee the execution of the Events strategy with a multi-year horizon and ensure appropriate resourcing models are managed to enable delivery of year-round events.

The role involves managing and delivering multiple priorities with outstanding visitor experience outcomes. Tasks will include:

  • Providing strategic, operational and logistical management of all events to ensure they meet audience expectations, business objectives and experience requirements.
  • Carrying out regular and effective communication of the forward schedule of events and festivals activity internally and to key stakeholders, including leading and convening internal program activity meetings and successfully communicating program changes and key program results
  • Evaluating and overcome program risks, and producing program reports and dashboards for stakeholders.

To be successful in the role, applicants will need to demonstrate prior experience in a similar role within the events management, tourism, marketing or the like, sector. Additionally:

  • Extensive experience in the development and delivery of events programs, including management of time, cost, quality, resources and risk, with outstanding performance results.
  • Experience in coordinating staff, volunteers and contractors of different disciplines and across teams to successfully deliver on the event outcomes for an optimum visitor experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of program and project management methodologies, and experience implementing project management tools to plan, manage and report on inter-connected projects, schedules, budgets and resources.
  • Some commercial experience, including demonstrated experience in negotiation and contract initiation and management
    Able to use internal data and external insights to identify and respond to business trends and drivers and
  • Sound communications and leadership skills and the ability to motivate, train and support staff to work as a team to achieve event and program outcomes
