Museums Victoria seeks to appoint a Head of First Peoples to provide strategic leadership and oversight of the newly created First Peoples department in alignment with Museum Victoria’s Vision, Mission and Values.
Positioning First Peoples’ living cultures, histories and knowledge at the core of Museums Victoria’s practice is the first of three transformational themes identified in the 2017-2025 Strategic Plan.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
Community relationships are central to positioning First Peoples at the core of everything that Museums Victoria aspires. Such relationships have led to the development of the Field Guide to the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape App through the knowledge of the Gunditjmara people, traditional owners of the stone country of western Victoria, and the creation of a Possum skin cloak made by Phoebe Nicholson, artist, Wemba Wemba and Barapa Barapa Elder and healer for the First Peoples exhibition.
The position of Head of First Peoples will continue to engage with community members from the Yulendj Group of Koorie elders, members of the Bunjilaka Community Reference Group from across Victoria. in addition to maintaining deep connections with the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee (ACHAC).
Reporting to the Director of Research & Collections, the position is responsible for developing, leading and driving Museums Victoria’s strategic plan as it applies to First Peoples’, with oversight of:
- Bunjilaka – Australia’s leading Aboriginal Cultural Centre, home to one of the most significant Aboriginal cultures collections in the world;
- Australian First Peoples Curatorial Team (with a focus on Victorian First Peoples);
- International First Peoples Curatorial Team (with a focus on Asia Pacific, including but not limited to: Indonesia; Micronesia; and Polynesia);
- First Peoples’ Collection Management & Strategy.
