Auckland Museum is seeking a new Head of Human History. This is a critical position, key to the museum’s success in fulfilling its role as a trusted Kaitiaki, ensuring the utility and enjoyment of collections by current and future generations. The Head of Human History leads the team responsible for the development and management of the Museum’s extensive and nationally important Human History collections. The team includes professional staff holding specialised collection management technical skills and subject knowledge, curatorial and research expertise.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic team leader and an experienced museum professional who has proven abilities to manage in a complex environment with competing priorities and drivers. Success in the role relies on collaborative relationships across the whole organisation, leadership of research and collection development, and strong external networks with stakeholders and professional colleagues.
To be successful in this fulltime position, you will offer:
- Proactive and aspirational leadership and direction for all direct reports, enabling excellence in collection management with high levels of team engagement and job satisfaction
- Broad knowledge of New Zealand history and cultures
- Demonstrated ability to strategically analyse contemporary research and future trends of human history collections
- Extensive work experience (10+ years) in museums or related organisations
- Experience in the development, management and care of collected heritage material
- Thorough knowledge of current development in digital technologies as they relate to online service provision, collection access and digital collecting
