MAAS currently operates three sites, the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, Sydney Observatory in Millers Point and Museums Discovery Centre in Castle Hill. In April 2018, the NSW Government announced the largest investment in museum infrastructure in Australia’s history, which will enable MAAS to expand its operations, and will ensure the Museum and its collection remain a critical part of our local and global communities for centuries to come.

The opportunity
The Museum’s Programs and Engagement team as well as Curatorial Collections and Exhibition department is currently seeking a Head of Indigenous to play a key role in leading authentic Indigenous engagement and presentation for MAAS. In this role you will liaise with internal and external stakeholders and will oversee the effective delivery of projects, programs including the museum’s the Reconciliation Action Plan. You will ensure that key relationships are developed and maintained, and that indigenous perspective are represented in all programming and exhibitions and authentic community engagement and consultation is integrated into the MAAS culture.
Day to day you will:
- Propose, develop, implement, manage and review an annual Business Plan consistent with the Museum’s Strategic Plan.
- Develop protocols and provide leadership to build cultural capability across MAAS.
- Develop and implement a range of exciting, innovative programs and exhibitions that integrate and represent Indigenous cultural perspectives and that address the needs of audiences, ensuring that appropriate Indigenous protocols are integrated by all staff.
- Develop and coordinate strong and positive engagement and liaison with Indigenous communities to build effective networks and working relationships for the benefit of MAAS and the Indigenous communities.
- Implement and provide meaningful reporting to stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure consistency with objectives as well as maintaining awareness of current practices and procedures.
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders, both external and internal, to facilitate the provision of timely expert strategic and high-level advice to the Executive on directions, issues, policy developments and legislation to support informed decision making across the agency.
- Consult with Indigenous communities and enterprises
- Manage external affairs and communications with key Indigenous, museum, cultural, tourism stakeholders to obtain their optimal contribution and develop opportunities through the coordination of agency’s Indigenous engagement strategy and reputation growth.
- Research and develop strategic funding submissions on behalf of the Executive to identify opportunities for growth and diversified funding streams to assist the agency in meeting its objectives as outlined in the strategic plan.
- Critically analyse and interpret public sector policies and programs to effect positive change in the role and reputation of MAAS as a Government agency.
- Provide high-level development, coordination and support for identified strategic projects, interpretation and public program outcomes including engagement of specialist external services, to ensure relevant projects are delivered on time and at expected levels
