Head of Iwi Relationships | Pouawhi ā-Iwi

Tuia te tangata, tuia ngā kōrero, tuia ngā taonga

The Ngā Manu Atarau Directorate works in partnership with iwi, hapū and whānau, museums and whare taonga throughout Aotearoa, and advocates for mana motuhake for Māori and Moriori and returning tīpuna and karāpuna to their source communities.

The Iwi Relationships team works to implement the Mana Taonga principle which ensures iwi and communities are able to exercise their tikanga at Te Papa, acknowledging kaitiakitanga and the care and management of their taonga housed within the museums’ collections. The team establishes and maintains these relationships through iwi relationship agreements, collaborating on mutually beneficial projects and by supporting aspirations of the iwi in residence. The team alongside other cultural agencies, assists Māori and Moriori through the Treaty of Waitangi Settlement process and supports post-settlement commitments. This team fosters biculturalism and tikanga Māori within the wider organisation of Te Papa and its activities.

As Pouawhi ā-Iwi, you will play a vital role in the Ngā Manu Atarau Directorate in developing and delivering a sound direction for, as well as the management and on-going maintenance of iwi relationships with Te Papa Tongarewa. You will oversee the operational management of Rongomaraeroa Marae, work closely with the other teams within the directorate and the Mātauranga Māori curatorial team to enhance the understanding of Ngā Manu Atarau’s work with iwi and the sector. You have existing positive relationships with key iwi stakeholders, and experience engaging with iwi organisations, using a high competency and understanding of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. You will be able to manage and deliver complex projects, have a good understanding of the knowledge of museum practice, both nationally and internationally. Strategic thinking and planning, alongside proven management experience will also be part of your skillset.

Inspire, connect, deepen, and develop.  Bring your extensive knowledge of te ao Māori to a role which enables all our people to work with iwi communities.  As a leader, you will be empowering Te Papa to share New Zealand’s taonga and stories with Aotearoa and the world.
