Auckland Museum is a much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events and educational programmes.

The Auckland Museum has an exceptional opportunity for an innovative and experienced Head of Learning and Public Programmes, who will responsible for the development and delivery of vibrant learning and public programmes, onsite, around Auckland, and online.

The Head of Learning and Public Programmes will successfully lead and manage the Learning & Public Programmes teams to achieve the aspirations of the organisation, as articulated in strategic plans and in the Annual Plan. This is a vital role for the development of audiences and for the positive profile of the Museum externally and will support Auckland Museum in its efforts to grow the number and diversity of people who take part in Museum programmes. The role will play a key part in the Museums commitment to placing itself as an integral part of all our communities, through developing innovative and fun programs with communities across Auckland.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Develop and lead the implementation of the strategies, policies and plans to ensure that ambitions are achieved in regard to the nature of the programme at the Museum, the learning digital content, exhibition learning and programming outcomes and the Museum’s work around Auckland.
  • Lead and manage the complexity of all learning and public programmes, content and projects, ensuring cross-organisational and external partner involvement.
  • Lead the team in identifying opportunities for productive collaboration with other organisations and sectors in order to achieve the aims and ambitions for learning and engagement.
  • Build the profile of the Museum’s learning and public programme as a model of best practice, establishing new approaches for delivering onsite, offsite and online.

Key Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience at a senior managerial level in an environment that has a strong learning and /or community focus.
  • Ability to lead and manage individuals and teams.
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand learning and community environment.
  • Understanding of the potential of digital engagement in museums, especially for learning.
  • Experience of having driven change and growth in a relevant sector, which would include museums, libraries, tertiary sector, cultural and creative sector.
  • Tertiary qualification relevant to the Museum’s activities or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge and experience of tikanga M?ori and/or Pacific cultures
