Unique leadership opportunity in the learning and museum sector

For two decades, Te Papa has been at the forefront of pioneering innovative visitor and learning experiences through engagement with the national collections. In an exciting period of transformation and growth, Te Papa is seeking an inspiring and experienced Head of Learning Innovation to lead Te Papa’s learning strategy, contribute leadership to the organisation and to lead the Learning Innovation team.

About you:

As our Head of Learning Innovation, you’ll play a vital role in the Collections, Research and Learning Directorate, developing and delivering a sound intellectual and strategic direction for Te Papa’s lifelong learning programmes, products and experiences. You’ll lead a talented team who enable innovative learning experiences for formal learners through engagement with Te Papa’s collections, exhibitions, cultural and scientific resources, and Hīnātore | Learning Lab.

You’ll have solid experience in leading and managing high performing teams and developing systems and processes to support organisational growth. You’ll bring a strategic approach to managing external contracts and supporting new initiatives, with your strong stakeholder and project management skills. Multitasking will be in your DNA and you’ll enjoy working in a fast paced environment.

We’re looking for an educational leader who can take a strength-based and analytical approach to grow and constantly improve Te Papa’s lifelong learning offer, building on our innovative and research-driven kaupapa. You’ll be committed to bi-culturalism and a commitment to life-long learning. Finally, you’re excited by the prospect of providing cross-functional leadership by working with a diverse range of talented museum staff (eg curators, visitor services, digital, commerical) on a daily basis.

About us:

Te Papa is New Zealand’s national museum, renowned for being bicultural, research-driven, innovative and fun. Our success is built on our relationships with and our ability to represent our communities. Our vision is Changing Hearts, Minds and Lives. Biculturalism, mana taonga and learning are at our core.

Having just celebrated our 20th birthday, it’s an exciting time at Te Papa: we are currently renewing our permanent galleries and exhibitions alongside Mahuki—Innovation Hub and Hīnātore, our Learning Lab which opened in March 2017. We are embarking on a meaningful national learning partnership and a number of exciting formal and informal learning initiatives.

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to lead a creative team through a period of growth, in a dynamic organisation that is breaking new ground in learning and the museum sector. If this sounds like you, we would love to talk.

We are open to a secondment for the right candidate. All considered applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.
