Head of Science

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

For nearly two decades, Te Papa has housed, nurtured and empowered the legacies of New Zealand and its people. We are built on a foundation of innovation and co-creation – community and culture that has transformed our history and our heritage into something tangible, something engaging. As our journey continues, we embrace the idea of renewal and the opportunity to once again delve into New Zealand, its past, present, and future. We pride ourselves on what our predecessors have created, something that is contemporary, cutting-edge, and unique to our country.

Here is an opportunity that is unlike any other. As our Head of Science, you’ll play a vital role in the Collections, Research and Engagement Directorate, developing and implementing a sound intellectual and strategic direction that will continue to enhance our scientific research and offering.

As Te Papa embarks on a monumental renewal process, you will lead a talented team of researchers, enabling them to bring your ideas and visions to life. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, you and your team will reform the way science is perceived and shared across New Zealand and the world – it will no longer be something that is unreachable or intangible to the wider community, it will be creative, immersive, and meaningful. You will have the opportunity on some of the most exciting and unique endeavours in the industry, creating a space where science can progress and educate. You will also act as ambassador for science and research at Te Papa, working alongside government agencies, academic institutions, and corporate partners worldwide to identify and resolve problems in the sector.

Along with a relevant PhD, you have extensive experience in the scientific industry and have likely worked within a research institution during your career. You are well renowned within the sector for your innovative and pioneering research offerings, and you have a number of high quality national and international networks with which you can connect to. Your ability to collaborate and engage with key stakeholders and partnerships is second to none, meaning you are able to inspire and motivate them to ensure the Science programme progresses as it should. You are a leader and a mentor and are wholly dedicated to sharing science at a communal level, continuing to overcome its challenges, and creating a space where it can continue to develop and prosper.

Now is your time to bring your exceptional abilities to an organisation that is constantly breaking new ground and will allow you to fully immerse yourself in some of the most amazing scientific research work in the world – work that is both tangible and incredibly rewarding.

If you’re ready to take part in one of the most important and inspiring evolutions in both New Zealand and the museum sector worldwide, we would love to talk to you.
