Housed in one of Australia’s most prominent national heritage-listed buildings, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House was the first museum in Australia dedicated to telling the story of the journey of our democracy. It seeks to provide a range of innovative exhibitions, tours, interpretation, education programs and public activities that will inspire and challenge visitors to explore democracy from its ancient roots to the present day and possible futures.

The Heritage Coordinator has a key role in assisting in the management of heritage values of the place and its collections. Old Parliament House is on the National and Commonwealth Heritage lists and is protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and the Old Parliament House and Curtilage Heritage Management Plan (HMP).

The Heritage Coordinator will work in an agile project team contributing to the delivery of projects at Old Parliament House. The Heritage Coordinator will provide specialist advice to ensure project delivery is consistent with the EPBC Act and the Old Parliament House HMP. The Heritage Coordinator will work closely with colleagues in other teams in the museum including Facilities, Capital Projects, and Exhibitions, and will play an important role in ensuring organisational outcomes are achieved in harmony with heritage values that recognise, preserve and communicate the spirit of place.

The key duties of the position include:

Under the guidance of the Manager, Heritage, the Heritage Coordinator will be required to:

  • Prepare written documentation using the established heritage management framework for Old Parliament House, the Actions Proposal Process, for review by the Action Committee and Delegate.
  • Provide written and verbal heritage advice, based on research and policy, to guide the practical implementation of projects at Old Parliament House. This will include problem-solving and seeking to facilitate agency objectives to deliver projects whilst protecting the heritage values. You will be required to assist with research for Actions Proposals and to review paperwork prepared by others and provide constructive feedback in preparation for final review or approval by the Manager, Heritage.
  • Represent Heritage at project meetings, track and monitor projects, identify and communicate heritage risks and advise on milestones where heritage inspections and approvals are required.
  • Manage project data that increases the amount and accuracy of heritage documentation including photography. Provide direction to colleagues and coordinate others to correctly obtain and file these records.
  • Prepare content for reporting including the quarterly Board Report and the Annual Report.
  • Communicate the place’s heritage values by working closely with colleagues across the organization on collaborative projects including exhibitions, events, and public communications.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of heritage management processes and tools.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, external contractors including specialist trades, conservation experts and others to achieve the desired outcomes. Manage contractors and provide direction to junior staff.
  • Assist the Heritage and Collections team as required.
