ABOUT THE POSITION:

The primary responsibility of the Project Officer will be

  1. Assisting with Genomics research projects in Herpetology, including work in the DNA laboratory, undertaking library preparation for phylogenomic analysis, data management for samples and compiling bioinformatic data.
  2. Assisting with Field research projects in Herpetology including field collecting, recording and analysis of data.

Purpose of this Position

The primary purpose of the position is to work with Senior Curator of Terrestrial Vertebrates and Senior Manager of Genetic Resources to undertake herpetology research projects. The successful applicant will have experience in herpetology field surveys, DNA extraction and QC, preparation of DNA libraries in a molecular laboratory and experience with analysis of sequence data and bioinformatics. The position will be for 3 months.

Primary Accountability

This position is accountable for:

  1. Participating as a team member on fieldwork and collection trips.
  2. Assisting in research using herpetology genomics, including DNA extractions, sample preparation and bioinformatics data management.
  3. Inputting data into spreadsheets to maintain research records of molecular, laboratory and field-based research activities on reptiles and amphibians.
  4. Complying with Museum Victoria’s policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations.

The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, but within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Selection Criteria

  1. Experience in working with and handling lizards and amphibians in the field and experience undertaking field-based animal surveys.
  2. Experience collecting genetic tissue samples in the field.
  3. Experience undertaking DNA extractions, sample preparation and genomic library preparation in a molecular laboratory.
  4. Experience compiling Bioinformatics metadata for Bioplatforms Australia sequencing projects.
  5. The successful applicant is required to undergo a National Police Records Check and be assessed as suitable (new employees are required to meet this cost)

Qualifications

The applicant must have a relevant tertiary degree (e.g., Bachelor of Sciences) with relevant research and/or museum based collections experience.
