Sovereign Hill is a dynamic group of museums presenting the mining, social, cultural and environmental heritage of the Ballarat region and its impact on Australia’s history.
Sovereign Hill maintains teams of working horses living and working at Sovereign Hill. The Horse Department is responsible for maintaining the horses and their stables and for ensuring the horses carry out their daily work schedule. Horse breeds include Clydesdales, Percherons, cross breeds of these two breeds and Quarter horses. Experience with these breeds is essential.
The Horse Driver/Stable Hand & Rostering position is responsible for contributing to the Horse Department’s day to day operations including Rostering, SOP Guidelines and electronic Horse Medical Records in Sovereign Hill’s Township, stables and paddocks.
They are responsible for assisting with the care of horses, cleaning of stables, driving non-passenger and passenger vehicles and moving horses to their required locations. They are also responsible for the Horse Team Rostering, SOP guidelines and electronic medical records.
To be successful in this role you must have:
- Experience within a stables, farming or veterinary environment
- Experience in driving 2 and/or 4 horse drawn vehicles
- Excellent heavy horse handling skills with a knowledge and understanding of horse behaviour
- Demonstrated ability to confidently and safely ride horses and a demonstrated awareness of OHS requirements
- Public speaking and communication skills to work effectively as a team and with visitors
- Experience in preparing staff rosters in line with budgets and priorities
- Ability to work across flexible rosters including weekends, public holidays and school holidays
- A commitment to work in line with policies and procedures and as part of a team
- Demonstrated experience in administering basic medications, as per prescribed by vet, would be advantageous.
